Why wild weekends with bottomless Rosé and detox days go hand in hand – and how to enter the right mindset when it all seems to be getting out of hand.
We’ve all been there – one too many sleepless nights, drinking too much, slacking on eating habits, high stress levels and here we are feeling sluggish, heavy, bloated and even anxious or depressed (recognize that feeling?). We all love those weekends where days turn into nights and we don’t keep count of the amount of Rosé we are having. As long as we manage to keep a healthy balance, we are fine and our bodies and mental health can usually cope. But there are times when it seems to be getting out of control. Trust us, we know what we´re talking about… That´s why we have gathered some tools and steps to enter the right mindset, update your routines, and start some detox days. Here´s how to get back on track to feeling healthy, happy, and balanced.
DETOX: more than a buzz-word?
Yes, it is. But detoxification is nothing other than a cleansing and elimination process to get rid of what does not serve you. When it comes to your body it means removing toxins that have gathered due to a poor diet, too much alcohol, inflammation, environmental factors (smoke, pollution, cleaning and beauty products) or medications. On a daily basis, your body’s detoxification pathways – liver, kidneys, skin, gut and lungs – do their job. But sometimes it is necessary to show yourself some love by supporting these processes to feel your best again.
Good news: usually there is no need for drastic measures. Take it day by day and you will be surprised how easy a few adjustments will fit into your every-day life – from mindset to eating habits.
1. Get on bord & practice self-love
To set yourself up for success you need to really be “on bord”, so be mindful that you are telling yourself the right story. You are taking extra care of your mind and body and this is a great act of self-love. Make sure you come from a place of empowerment instead of self-loathing and always look forward instead of backwards. It’s ok to have overindulged in the past but now you are off to a happier and healthier place.
2. Up your water intake
Water or herbal teas are your go-to here and they can work wonders. Keeping hydrated will support your body to flush out toxins, improve your blood pressure and regulate any cravings. Water also hydrates the skin and works as a natural anti-aging agent. Plus: it will give your metabolism that extra boost to get things moving again!
3. Kiss sugar goodbye
Sugar (especially refined, industrial sugar) does nothing for you. It messes with blood sugar levels and can lead to insulin resistance and increased inflammation when not managed correctly. Become mindful here and try to get rid of all sugars for a few days. Berries or natural sweeteners such as maple syrup are good replacements if you miss something sweet.
4. Eat real plant based whole-foods
Negative energy around food? Get rid of it! It´s no longer about feeling restricted – it´s about feeling empowered by putting the most nutrient rich foods in your body. Opt for an abundance of fruits and vegetables paired with healthy fats and complex carbohydrates (mainly from plants). Focus on how good you feel fueling yourself with the best foods. And focus on the benefits – hello glowing skin!
5. Make time for self-care
Repeat after us: I make time for self-care on a daily basis. Whether this means going for a walk during your lunch break, taking a bath, getting a massage, breathing deeply, reading a book or meditating – the options are endless and can fit any busy lifestyle. And remember: it feels good to feel good.
6. Prioritize Sleep
Sleep makes all the difference and the amount and quality of your sleep will affect nearly every aspect of your life, so be mindful of this. Create a proper sleeping routine and stick to it. Opt for 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night and remember that sleep is critical for stress management, maintaining a healthy weight, and overall well-being.
7. Move your body
Movement is a powerful tool to feeling healthy and balanced and does wonders for your mental and overall health. It aids your digestion, boosts your metabolism and keeps inflammation in check. It is up to you how you want to move – just make it fun and find out what feels good in the moment. Plus: the endorphin release that you experience when moving makes you feel good and motivates you to eat well, too.
8. Try to stress less
Let’s face it – we all get stressed. It increases the levels of our stress hormone cortisol, which makes us feel tense, increases our appetite, and messes with our mood. As long as we are stressed out, the body holds on to extra fat tissue and will have difficulty losing weight and flushing out toxins stored in fat cells. Luckily there are so many ways to de-stress, choose what works for you – from deep belly breaths to taking a bath with lavender oil before bedtime, stretching or meditating.
9. Be mindful
We are great believers in the power of consciousness, which simply means being mindful and fully present in the moment. Take this period as a time of self-reflection and take everything in deeply. Which habits, choices, thoughts are serving you and which areas could use some work? Which people in your life lift you up and give you energy and who brings negativity and bad influences? It is never too late to make changes.
Don’t expect miracles over night – it firstly takes some time to get the body out of balance and it takes time to heal but you are on the right track!
